CHAPTER 28
Monday, September 8th
11:02 a.m.
Elle ran to her bedroom, slammed the door, and threw herself onto the bed. Susan didnât seem to get the hint. A few seconds later, Elle heard her soft knocks on the door.
âI want to be alone for a while,â Elle called.
âAre you okay?â Susan asked through the closed door.
âIâm fine, just tired.â
âWhat did Sergeant Patterson say to you to upset you so much?â
âNot now, Susan.â
Susan finally got the message, and a few seconds later, Elle heard the muffled sound of the television in the living room. Elle could finally cry in peace.
Within a matter of minutes, Elle drifted into a troubled sleep. Images raced through her mind and tumbled into a nonsensical nightmare. She saw her sister fighting against the hand holding her down and struggling to get to the surface for a gulp of air. Then, she saw the girlâs bloody face in the bathroom, followed by so much blood and the unrecognizable faces of Bob and Jules. A moment later, it was her sister whose face was smashed and bloodied as she lay on the bed, stiff and cold.
A scream awakened Elle from her nightmare, and then Susan threw open the bedroom door and rushed to her.
Elle sat and pushed her back against the headboard. âWhat is it?â she asked.
âYou were screaming,â Susan said. âAre you all right?â
Elle rubbed her hand over her head. âIâm okay. I just had a nightmare.â
âWhat about?â
âIt doesnât matter,â Elle said. She paused for several seconds and then asked, âSusan, the night everyone was killed, did we go straight to bed after we cleaned up the kitchen?â
âYou donât remember?â
âI guess I fell asleep right away,â Elle said. âI donât remember doing anything else, and I know I was tired.â
âNo,â Susan said. âI heard you come out of your room at least twice.â
âYou did?â Elle thought she was going to be sick. Why donât I remember?
âI thought you were listening to the Bartletts from the top of the stairs,â Susan added.
âNo, I wouldnât do that,â Elle said. Would I?
Susan shrugged. âMaybe you were just going to the bathroom, but it sounded like you walked past my room, and you were gone quite a while. I heard you walk back down the hall and shut the door to your room.â
âWhat time did you hear me?â
Susan pulled on her braid and gave Elle a curious look. âThe first time was about twenty minutes after we went to our rooms, and then I heard you again in the middle of the night.â Susanâs eyes widened. âMaybe it wasnât you the second time. Maybe it was the murderer.â
âTell me exactly what you heard the second time,â Elle said.
Susan shrugged. âI heard someone in the hall, thatâs all. I just assumed it was you.â
âWere they going toward the stairs or up the hall toward my room?â
Susan squinted her eyes. âToward the stairs, I think, but I canât be sure. I was barely awake.â She paused a moment. âDo you think it was the killer?â
âI donât know,â Elle said.
